As one of the most basic and widely used products in the iron and steel industry, carbon steel coil is a coiled form of iron-carbon alloy processed by rolling. With its excellent comprehensive performance, convenient processability and high cost performance

As one of the most basic and widely used products in the iron and steel industry, carbon steel coil is a coiled form of iron-carbon alloy processed by rolling. With its excellent comprehensive performance, convenient processability and high cost performance, it has deeply penetrated into many core fields of the national economy such as construction, manufacturing, transportation and chemical industry, and has become a core material supporting industrial production and infrastructure construction. Its essence is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content not exceeding 2.1wt.%, usually containing auxiliary elements such as manganese, silicon and copper, and the content of various elements is clearly limited. Among them, the manganese content is less than 1.65wt.%, and the silicon and copper contents are both less than 0.6wt.%. The proportion of these elements directly determines the performance difference and application scenario difference of carbon steel coils.

I. Core Classification and Performance Differences of Carbon Steel Coils

According to the difference in carbon content, carbon steel coils can be divided into three categories: low-carbon steel coils, medium-carbon steel coils and high-carbon steel coils. The three have significant differences in microstructure and performance characteristics, adapting to different application needs.

In addition to classification by carbon content, carbon steel coils can also be divided into hot-rolled carbon steel coils and cold-rolled carbon steel coils according to the production process. Hot-rolled carbon steel coils are made by heating steel ingots above the recrystallization temperature, rolling them through multiple passes, then cooling and coiling. They have the characteristics of large production capacity, low cost and moderate strength, and are currently the most productive category in the market. Cold-rolled carbon steel coils are secondary rolled from hot-rolled coils at room temperature and below the recrystallization temperature. They have the advantages of small thickness tolerance, high surface finish and higher strength, and are suitable for scenarios with high requirements on appearance and precision. Their thickness is usually between 0.12-6.0mm and width is 1000-1500mm. The coil weight (3-8mt/coil) and surface treatment methods (such as chrome plating and oiling, anti-fingerprint treatment) can be customized according to needs.

Common carbon steel coil grades cover multiple domestic and foreign standards, including China's Q195, Q215, Q235, Q255, Q275, Japan's S10C, S20C, the United States' ASTM 1010, 1020, and the European Union's S235JR, S275J0, etc. Different grades correspond to different mechanical properties, which can meet the customized needs of various scenarios.

II. Production Process and Core Advantages of Carbon Steel Coils

(I) Core Production Process

The production of carbon steel coils mainly revolves around four core links: "smelting-rolling-coiling-finishing", among which the rolling process directly determines the performance and precision of the product:

  1. Smelting link: Using iron ore and scrap steel as the main raw materials, impurities are removed through blast furnace ironmaking and converter steelmaking, and the carbon content and the proportion of various alloying elements are controlled to obtain carbon steel molten steel that meets the standards. At present, the industry has formed a dual-track production system dominated by blast furnace-converter (accounting for 87.6%) and supplemented by electric furnace (accounting for 12.4%). With its environmental protection advantages, the electric furnace short process is gradually increasing its proportion.

  2. Hot rolling process: The steel billet is heated to 1100-1250℃ (above the recrystallization temperature), gradually rolled into steel strips of the required thickness through rough rolling and finishing rolling units, then the temperature is controlled by laminar cooling, and finally coiled into coils. This process has high efficiency and low cost, is suitable for mass production of general-purpose carbon steel coils, and is the main supply source for the construction and machinery fields.

  3. Cold rolling process: Taking hot-rolled coils as the base material, multiple passes of cold rolling are carried out at room temperature. During the process, annealing, pickling and other processes can be combined to eliminate rolling stress and improve surface quality, and finally cold-rolled coils with high precision and smooth surface are obtained. Its thickness tolerance can be controlled within ±0.0015 inches, which is suitable for high-end manufacturing scenarios.

  4. Finishing link: According to the application needs, the carbon steel coil is subjected to surface treatment (such as galvanizing, oiling), slitting, cutting and other processing to adapt to specific application scenarios and improve the corrosion resistance and practicality of the product.

(II) Core Advantages

The reason why carbon steel coil can become the "universal material" in the industrial field is mainly due to its irreplaceable comprehensive advantages:

  • Outstanding cost performance: Raw materials are easy to obtain, and the production process is mature. Compared with products such as stainless steel and alloy steel plates, the cost is lower, which can meet the needs of mass and low-cost production, and it is one of the steel products with the highest cost performance.

  • Excellent processability: It is easy to weld, cut, bend and punch, and can be processed into various forms such as plates, pipes and profiles according to needs, adapting to the customized needs of different industries, and forming can be completed without complex processing equipment.

  • Controllable performance: By adjusting the carbon content and production process, the full range of performance adjustment from low hardness and high toughness to high hardness and high wear resistance can be realized, covering various needs from ordinary civil use to high-end industry.

  • Wide application scenarios: It has both strength and practicality, and can adapt to the needs of multiple industries. In addition, some products have certain corrosion resistance after surface treatment, which can be used in outdoor, marine and other scenarios, with a long service life.

III. Core Application Fields of Carbon Steel Coils

The application of carbon steel coils covers all aspects of the national economy. Among them, the four major fields of construction, machinery manufacturing, automobiles and home appliances are its main consumer markets, accounting for more than 70%. The specific application scenarios are as follows:

The construction field is the largest consumer market of carbon steel coils, accounting for about 34.7%, mainly used in steel structure buildings, enclosure structures, infrastructure construction and other scenarios. Due to its good weldability and toughness, low-carbon steel coils are widely used in steel structure workshops, bridges, scaffolding, color steel plate substrates, etc.; medium-carbon steel coils are used in load-bearing components such as construction machinery, tower cranes and scaffolding fasteners, ensuring structural stability with moderate strength. With the rapid development of prefabricated buildings, the application proportion of carbon steel coils in steel structure components is continuously increasing, and at the same time, their application in high-end construction-related fields such as wind power towers and pressure vessels is also gradually expanding.

(II) Machinery Manufacturing Field

The machinery manufacturing field accounts for about 21.1%, which is the core application scenario of high-end carbon steel coils. With their excellent strength and wear resistance, medium-carbon steel coils and high-carbon steel coils are used to manufacture gears, shafts, bearings, molds, engineering machinery components, etc. For example, the body structural parts and transmission components of excavators and loaders all need to be processed with medium and high-carbon steel coils. At the same time, carbon steel coils can further improve their performance through subsequent heat treatment, adapting to the wear resistance and impact resistance needs of different mechanical components, and are indispensable basic materials in the machinery manufacturing field.

(III) Automobile Field

The automobile field accounts for about 14.2%. With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the demand for carbon steel coils shows a high-end trend. Low-carbon steel coils are used in automobile body panels, doors, chassis and other components, realizing complex shapes with good formability; medium-carbon steel coils are used in core components such as automobile drive shafts, gears and springs, ensuring the transmission stability and safety of vehicles. According to statistics, in 2025, the sales volume of new energy vehicles in China accounted for 47.9% of the total sales volume of new vehicles, driving the surge in demand for high-end carbon steel coils such as high-strength cold-rolled plates and plated plates for battery cases, which has become a new driving force for industry growth.

(IV) Home Appliance and Other Fields

In the home appliance field, low-carbon steel coils are used in the shells, liners, brackets and other components of refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. With the characteristics of high surface finish and easy painting, they improve the appearance texture of home appliance products; cold-rolled carbon steel coils are used in precision components inside home appliances to ensure the stability of products. In addition, carbon steel coils are also widely used in pipeline transportation (such as water supply and gas transmission pipelines), chemical equipment (such as reaction kettles and storage tanks), packaging materials (such as steel drums) and other fields. At the same time, they also play an important role in rail transit, energy infrastructure and other fields, and are basic materials supporting the comprehensive development of industry.
